Vitra’s Tom Vac chair was born in 1997, when Domus magazine commissioned Ron Arad to create a sculpture for the Milan Furniture Fair. Domus Totem consisted of hundred stacked chairs that were made of vacuum-formed aluminium. The name Tom Vac refers to the original manufacturing method and the renowned photographer Tom Vack. Today’s version, made of moulded plastic and steel, was launched by Vitra in 1999. Tom Vac is a versatile and comfortable chair that is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The delicate steel legs have a powder coated finish and the sculptural seat features special additives that slow down fading, caused by UV radiation.
