Wattle & Daub, the second full-length record of Philadelphia's amazing Strapping Fieldhands, is almost indescribable in its psychedelic pop beauty. While the band is properly lumped into their early work with the early 1990s lofi-stalwarts Guided by Voices, Pavement, Royal Trux and The Grifters vis-a-vis their early work, Wattle & Daub is a progress in sound quality and pop songwriting from their first effort. Ben Franklin Airbath is the hit of the 90s that should have been. Based on Robert Pollard's 1. Journey to the town of Brotherly Love (Ben Franklin's town, Ben Franklin's town...), Ben Franklin Airbath is a psychedelic masterpiece Bob Malloy wrote to capture the peculiar naked activities favored by one of the great statesman, inventor, and ladies of the United States. Check it out and turn it up while enjoying your own Ben Franklin Airbath. It's songs like The Author in Her Ear, Tickled with Olive Branch, and The Eath that place strapping fieldhands into the upper rhythms of songwriting in modern American rock and roll. Recorded in the same studio where Teddy Pendergrass, the Jacksons, David Bowie, Madonna and Pink recorded so many hits (Sigma Sound Studio), Wattle and Daub find the Strapping Fieldhands in their own unique direction of pop music that has not been fully understood since their first release in the fifteen years.
