A substantial Thai standing Buddha from the Rattanakosin period, Bangkok, probably late Rama V ca. 1900. The sculpture is notable for its exceptionally dense ornament.
The Buddha is depicted in full royal regalia, with an elaborate tiered crown, chest and shoulder ornaments, richly decorated robes, anklets and highly detailed royal footwear. A very few reflective glass inlays have survived.
Both hands are raised in the double abhaya mudra.
The Buddha stands on an unusually elaborate multi-tiered octagonal throne, retaining areas of original red lacquer beneath the worn gilding. The hollow-cast underside preserves remnants of the original coarse casting core. A rear fitting was made to support the rod of a ceremonial chatra (royal parasol).

CONDITION
Good antique condition with considerable age-related wear and losses.
The original gilding and lacquer are extensively worn, with craquelure and losses revealing the darker metal and red ground beneath.
The uppermost part of the flame finial is broken, and the remaining finial is slightly bent.
The Buddha's feet have some movement within their mounting, allowing the figure to sway slightly, but also to be adjusted into position.
The right arm is slightly out of alignment with the body, appearing to reflect an asymmetry in the original modelling/casting.

An unusually large and richly ornamented Buddha, distinguished by its elaborate royal costume, a few surviving glass decoration, original lacquer and gilding, hollow-cast construction and exceptionally detailed ceremonial throne.
