Item Description
A set of five hand-painted Japanese wooden kokeshi dolls, offered together as one lot. The group includes work by ・渡辺正雄 Watanabe Masao, titled "Mushin" and known for its serene, closed-eyed expression. Watanabe is described as a master craftsman honoured with distinctions including the Prime Minister's Award.
・Masao Watanabe is a master craftsman officially recognized by the Japanese government as a "Contemporary Master Craftsman" (Gendai no Takumi), with prestigious awards including the Prime Minister's Award, the Mayor of Osaka Award, the Japan Rural Craft Creators Association Chairman's Award, and the JETRO Award.
It also includes a piece by 関口三作 Sekiguchi Sansaku, with a charming bobbed hairstyle and a refined, modern form that suits contemporary interiors.
It also includes a piece by Sansaku Sekiguchi (関口三作), a master creative kokeshi craftsman officially recognized as a "Contemporary Master Craftsman" (Gendai no Takumi) by the Japanese government and a recipient of the prestigious Yellow Ribbon Medal (黄綬褒章), with multiple Prime Minister's Awards at the All-Japan Kokeshi Competition. Featuring a charming bobbed hairstyle and a refined, modern form that suits contemporary interiors.
The remaining pieces include a landscape scene with a bridge and swans, a calligraphic inscription with a pavilion and a boat on water, and a small kimono-clad figure with a plum pattern. Several dolls carry ink signatures on the underside of the base, and one also has a red seal. The largest doll has a removable lidded head and a dark-stained body painted with red and white plum blossoms and a signature on the side. The textured-body doll has a simple round head and an inscription on the base. The other dolls have turning heads and cylindrical bodies.
Together the group shows a range of styles, from traditional to creative (sosaku) kokeshi, in natural wood with warm tones. Not every doll has been individually attributed. The Watanabe and Sekiguchi attributions are based on the information available to me. Please review all photographs, which show the signatures and each piece in detail.
