The prayer book of Anne de Bretagne, wife of two successive kings of France and famous patroness and collector, is a particularly impressive example of a private manuscript.
Embedded in a series of popular depictions from the lives of saints and biblical scenes, the 34 miniatures of the prayer book of Anne de Bretagne shine with a focus on the loving relationship between the client and her son with King Charles VIII of France.
Anne de Bretagne has also set a monument for herself with her prayer book: a miniature page shows her kneeling in front of a clergyman at confession. The decorative frames that surround the central miniature scenes are made up of a coloured grid with the three letters of her name varied in it.
This extraordinary masterpiece comes from one of the most renowned illuminators of the time, Jean Poyet , who worked at three French royal courts. He made the prayer book in 1492–95, a jewel of 15th century book illumination. In the light and airy landscapes, the extraordinary liveliness of the figures with their finely painted faces and their brightly colored clothing and the well-thought-out architecture, the beginnings of the Renaissance in France can be clearly recognized.
Anne de Bretagne intended her prayer book to be used to teach her son Charles-Orland the basics of her faith. The future king should be familiarized with the most important prayers and biblical stories. However, the king's son was only three years old when he died in 1495. The splendid last page of the little book shows him as an older boy, whom he was never to become, at prayer.
Anne de Bretagne's prayer book remained in France until 1905 when it was purchased by John Pierpont Morgan and taken to the USA, where it is guarded and preserved today in his famous library and museum.
