"Future Islands' lush and synth-driven sound is like many of their peers in Baltimore's Wham City scene, but they've got something distinct up their day-glo sleeves: frontman Samuel Herring's prancing, leonine growl. It's definitely an acquired taste, but anyone who gave last year's In Evening Air a chance found that the longer you listen, the more the artifice wears away. By the end of that record, Herring's cartoonish theatricality melted into a grandiose sadness.
Like the best and most deeply felt stuff on In Evening Air, "Before the Bridge", the A-side of a forthcoming 7", is another feel-bad break-up jam. The synths are wistful and warm, but the ever-forward gait of William Cashion's bass makes sure they never stay put long enough to wallow. Meanwhile Herring's voice sells small details ("I will walk you home/ And I will leave you there") and large pontifications ("For to forget a love is to regret") with equal theatrics. The whole track builds to such a heightened state of melodrama that, by the end, the refrain "Do you believe in love?/ Do you believe in love?" feels dutifully earned." -Pitchfork
