GameSpot 8/10
A great game that is affected by short gameplay
Shrek Crash and Smash Racing is a new addition to the Shrek videogame series and also an addition to the kart racing games for the GCN (and the other consoles). This is my review for Shrek Smash and Crash Racing.
Story: 7/10
This game takes place sometime after the events of Shrek 2. Gingy and Shrek are playing the "who can hold the breath the longest game" while Princess Fiona is timing them. Gingy and Shrek then start arguing over who won the game. Out of nowhere Donkey comes with the Fairy Godmother's wand. Donkey then turns various objects to life with the wand. Shrek, Princess Fiona, Gingy, and Donkey take off in their new races cars to compete for the number one position. This is a racing game and the story doesn't really matter. I give the story a 7.
Graphics: 9/10
I was surprised by the graphics in this game. The graphics look great and are not blocky like I expected. Dreamworks did a good job on bringing the model of the characters from the movie to the videogame. The tracks also have a good look. I give Dreamworks credit for turning both locations from Shrek 1 and 2 into tracks. I give the graphics a 9.
Sound: 7/10
The music this game features is quite catchy. Some of the tracks have really good music that sometimes you might hum to. The music is not what gives the sound a lower score though. It is the voice acting. The character voices do sound exactly like they do in the movies. That isn't the problem though. Ever play Mario Kart: Double Dash or Crash Nitro Kart? If so, then you will probably remember the repetitive character lines! The characters in this game repeat the same lines everytime. Each character must have two lines if they win a race, lose a race, or get hit by an item. It gets really annoying and old. I give the sound a 7.
Controls: 10/10
No complaint about the controls from me. Dreamwork did a good job on setting up the controls. The only control I am really not fond of is the jump button, but it works out at the end. I give the controls a perfect 10.
Gameplay: 8/10
First I will talk about the different modes in the game. Single Player Mode allows you to play in Tournaments, Cup Tournaments, Quick Race, and Time Trial. Tournament Mode has you racing on all 12 tracks. Your score is added up depending on what place you rank. You can unlock different things by completing Tournament Mode. Cup Tournament separates the tracks into 4 set of 3. You can pick one of the cups to race on. If you win the race, you will unlock different things. Time Trial is different from the other modes. You complete each track without items or other racers to see what the best time you can perform for each track.
This game features a total of 12 racers. The racers are from both Shrek 1 and 2. Each racer has their own stats and own vehicle. Some of the characters that are featured are Shrek, Princess Fiona, Gingy and Donkey. One thing I wish Dreamwork did though was add more characters as racers from the Shrek movie.
This game features 12 tracks from various locations in Shrek 1 and 2. The tracks are filled with obstacles, short-cuts, and traps. There are also a lot of breakable things on the track. The tracks were well-made in this game. The one problem I had though was the lack of tracks in this game.
This game also features a wide variety of weapons. Some weapons that are used give your racer and advantage while some other weapons are used as traps and blockades on the track. The weapons are all creative and are various things from the Shrek movies.
Replayability: 6/10
This is where the game lacks. The game has only 12 characters, 8 in which you unlock. It is pretty easy to unlock the characters. The game also lacks extra modes. You might unlock all the characters, tracks, and other features in a day or two.
Pros:
+ A different type of kart game.
+ A good variety of characters from the Shrek movies.
+ Tracks were well made and featured a lot of tracks, obstacles, and short-cuts.
+ Game stays true to the Shrek movies.
+ A good variety and creative power-ups.
+ Flawless controls.
+ The music featured is excellent.
+ The game includes scenes from the two Shrek movies.
+ The characters have humorous lines.
Cons:
- The character lines are reptitive.
- Not enough racers.
- Not enough tracks.
- The game can be completed in a day.
- The computer racers are dumb and cheap.
- Lack of Single Player Modes.
Buy, Rent, or Forget about it?
If you love racing games like CNK and MK: DD, then you should buy this game. If you want to play this game just for a test, then I suggest you to rent it.
