The inflatable airplane seat extender is used to fill the space in front of the plane seat with an air mattrass. It makes the overall space (seat + mattress) big enough for a small child to sleep on. We used it twice, successfully, on long cross-atlantic overnight flights. It was worth it.
I have 2 of them.
The new ones cost around $80-$100.

Please note, mine is an older model and it is not self-inflatable and it doesn't come with a pump. You have to inflate it by mouth. But it fills up quick and easy.
Worth mentioning that if you were to ask a specific airline if this thing is allowed, many will say "probably not". In general they don't want people bringing own furniture on the plane and blocking seat exit in case of emergency. But then based on our experience (and others' too), if you inflate it descretely when they turn off the light in the main cabin, and then cover it with a blanket, noone will bother you. (Worst case, they will ask you to put it away.) Having kids to sleep, even a little, on the plane is literally priceless. Unless you enjoy walking a child around the plane for hours. This item gives you a fighting chance for a few hours of sleep.
