Original decorated publisher’s cloth binding
Swedish first translation/early first-edition issue
Early ownership inscription dated 1902
The gilt work on the spine has survived remarkably well. The top figure looks like a stylized cherub/seraph, while the religious imagery incorporates the cross, radiating light and winged forms. Together with the Eye of Providence on the front, it’s a very elaborate late-19th-century Christian binding — much more decorative than the average theological book of the period.
Condition: good
The front decoration and gilt are excellent visually, but I can also see rubbing at the spine ends, some cloth loss/fraying at the bottom of the spine, scratches and rubbing to the rear board, age-toning to the paper, the 1902 inscription and later pencil markings. The book is approaching 130 years old.
Saphir himself is quite interesting:
Adolph Saphir (1831–1891) was born into a Jewish family in Budapest, converted to Christianity as a child with his family, and later became a Presbyterian minister and biblical writer in Britain. His Jewish background strongly influenced his interpretation of Hebrews.
