This is the second edition of Holberg’s Epistler, printed only a few years after the author’s death.
The volume contains Epistles 82–183 and reaches its printed conclusion on page 440. The book appears substantially complete.
Beautiful old full-leather binding with:
• raised spine bands
• gilt decoration
• original-style leather title labels reading “HOLBERG / EPISTLER” and “TOM II”
• decorative 18th-century typography and printer’s ornaments
• historical handwritten ownership signatures
• an old handwritten subject/index page inside the rear cover
• old writing/markings on the page edges
The interior is remarkably readable for a book printed in 1758. Pages show natural age toning, foxing and occasional staining. The leather binding has substantial rubbing and wear consistent with its age; please study photographs carefully for condition.
An especially charming copy because it still carries evidence of its previous readers and owners.
I purchased this book from an antique shop in Eskilstuna, Sweden, around 20 years ago and have kept it ever since. I am now moving overseas and unfortunately cannot take my old-book collection with me.
A lovely piece for a collector of antique books, Scandinavian literature, Holberg, Enlightenment history or 18th-century objects.
