From the series Chūshin Gishi Meimeiden (Biographies of the Loyal and Righteous Retainers) by Utagawa Yoshitora, depicting ”Ha” Okuda Magodayū Fujiwara no Shigemori, one of the Forty-Seven Rōnin. Produced in 1864.
The signature, publisher’s seal and censor’s seal can be confirmed.
His real name was Okuda Shigemori, and he was commonly known as Magodayū.
He originally served the Naitō family of the Toba Domain in Shima Province. When the elder sister of his lord, Naitō Tadakatsu, married into the Asano family of Akō, he accompanied her and entered the service of the Asano family.
However, Naitō Tadakatsu later caused a violent incident inside Edo Castle, resulting in the confiscation of his domain and the downfall of his house. Subsequently, Asano Naganori also drew his sword in the Matsu no Rōka (Pine Corridor) of Edo Castle, leading to the downfall of the Asano house. Thus, Magodayū experienced the loss of two lordly houses during his lifetime.
Magodayū studied swordsmanship under Horiuchi Masaharu and trained alongside fellow swordsmen Horibe Yasubei and Takada Gunbei. He was particularly known for wielding a distinctive long sword with a blade measuring over two shaku (approximately 60 cm) and an unusually long handle of one shaku six or seven sun (approximately 50 cm). According to historical accounts, the weapon resembled a small naginata (Japanese polearm).
Following the downfall of the Asano family, he became a leading member of the Edo faction advocating an immediate revenge attack, alongside Horibe Yasubei and others. He repeatedly urged Ōishi Kuranosuke to carry out the raid without delay.
During the raid on Kira's residence on the night of the fourteenth day of the twelfth month of Genroku 15 (1702), Magodayū joined the front-gate unit. Despite being 57 years old, he is said to have fought courageously, wielding his distinctive long sword.
After the successful raid, while the rōnin were making their way to Sengakuji Temple, Magodayū was reportedly subjected to stern questioning by a gatekeeper of the Mōri residence. He calmly and firmly explained that they were retainers of the Asano family who had avenged their lord and were now proceeding to Sengakuji Temple. His dignified response is said to have deeply impressed the gatekeepers.
Having fulfilled his duty of revenge, Magodayū was placed in the custody of the Hosokawa family and committed seppuku on the fourth day of the second month of Genroku 16 (1703).
His adopted son-in-law, Okuda Sadaemon, was also one of the Forty-Seven Rōnin. He participated in the raid and met the same fate on that day.
*Inscription:*
ー Shigemori was a loyal samurai who initially served the Naitō family before entering the service of the En'ya family.
He was responsible for managing weapons and military equipment and received a stipend of 200 koku. He was also the father of Tadaemon Yukitaka.
After leaving Akō, he travelled east and settled in Kamezawa-chō, near Ryūgokubashi Bridge, where he lived under the assumed name Nishimura Seizaemon.
Later, he moved with his wife and children into a residence rented from a member of the Naitō family.
His son, Tadaemon, was highly skilled in horsemanship and maintained close friendships with skilled horsemen serving various feudal families.
Magodayū himself was also remarkably skilled at taming and riding difficult, unruly horses.
In addition, he was highly proficient in archery and was regarded as a master of spear fighting.
During the night raid, he fully demonstrated his exceptional skills with a short bow and a hand spear, repeatedly troubling the enemy.
His extraordinary fighting ability was said to be far beyond that of an ordinary man.
He died at the age of 55.
