Framed 1987 Vintage Rolex Submariner Chronometer Watch Original Magazine Advertisement (ID: Rolex18)
Offered for sale here is a framed original Rolex Watch magazine advertisement from 1987.
The text on the print reads:
"There’s a ship out there somewhere." The somewhere was the ocean floor in Lancaster Sound, 500 miles north of the Arctic Circle.
The ship was HMS Breadalbane, caught by the ice, crushed and sunk in 1853. The speaker was Dr. Joe MacInnis, the first scientist to dive under the North Pole and the man who established Sub-Igloo, the first-ever underwater polar station.
Now he was possessed with rescuing Breadalbane, the world’s northernmost shipwreck. But first he had to find exactly where she had gone down.
In temperatures reaching 50° below zero, with a wind chill factor of -100°F, with ice slabs ever threatening to entangle sensitive equipment, probing the ice-darkened water was a technical problem of daunting proportions.
For divers the challenge is cold. Cold so extreme that if a man inhales too much as a tiny drop of sea water his larynx can contract and he will be choked.
It took four Arctic summers to pinpoint the location of Breadalbane. At last MacInnis’s side-scan sonar picked up the shape of a barque, upright, two of its masts standing, 57 fathoms down.
It was a moment of sheer euphoria. "Now I’ve found her," MacInnis exclaimed, "I want to reach out and touch her." But no dive under Arctic ice into the dark, freezing depths is undertaken lightly.
Searching for a shipwreck under the Arctic ice is not for ordinary divers.
Or ordinary watches.
First, cameras sent pictures to the surface. And what their initial evidence suggested was at last discovered to be true when MacInnis and his team brought to the ocean surface a perfectly preserved ship’s wheel. The very cold that had constantly threatened her rescuers had protected Breadalbane from disintegrating for 128 years.
It takes an exceptional watch to function in Arctic seas where, for divers, a reliable watch means life or death.
For 15 years Dr. Joe MacInnis has relied on the Rolex Submariner. "I’ve worn it everywhere," he says, "from the North Pole to the Red Sea." We wait to see where it will dive with him next.
